Growing Methods
We are a long time chemical-free farm, and were certified organic for 8 years. We believe in the principles of ecological agriculture. Organic farms work with nature to grow food that is not tainted with man-made insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, hormones, genetically modified organisms, e.coli, additives or irradiation. We are proud to be keeping American agriculture alive and doing so with sustainable methods.
At Gee Creek Farm we have taken the values and spirit of ecological agriculture a few steps further. For example, our farm is 100% drip irrigated with well water, saving a whopping 90% of the precious fresh water normally used in conventional irrigation. Drip irrigation puts the water where the plant needs it – at the roots – virtually eliminating the chance that fecal coli form bacteria can get spread on the leaves, unlike what can happen with traditional overhead irrigation using surface water (like river water).
Some other measures we take to make our farm environmentally friendly include:
- Use of bio-diesel as often as possible in our farm equipment and vehicles
- Reuse and recycling of packaging and irrigation tapes wherever possible
